Open DXF File

Information, tips and instructions

Open DXF File

A file with DXF extension (acronym for Drawing Exchange Format) is a file format for CAD design drawings that belongs to the AutoCAD program group, and is used to save the drawings created by those programs. This type of files allows interoperability between the DWG files, proprietary file format of the AutoCAD program, and the rest of the programs on the market, proprietary or license free.

There are still some incompatibilities between the native DWG and DXF files due to the complexity of the first one, although both can be opened by a wide variety of programs. That’s why, the task of opening a DXF file shouldn't be very problematic.

DXF files are vector format files, with labels for AutoCAD data and a wide variety of features, including support for dimensional objects, as well as support for associative sizing, curves and text.

To put you in context, DXF is considered an easy to analyze and more compatible format in comparison to DWG. It can be opened by a greater variety of programs because it is based on plain text ASCII format.

Due to its ASCII base, the DXF file is compatible with a wide variety of programs on Mac, Windows and Linux operating systems.

  • MacOS: Autodesk AutoCAD 2100, IMSI TurboCAD Deluxe v5, Microspot DWG Viewer, Dassault Systemes SolidWorks eDrawings Viewer, Engineered Software PowerCADD, OpenOffice.org, Adobe Illustrator CS5 and Adobe Flash CS5.
  • Windows: Autodesk AutoCAD 2012, Autodesk DWG TrueView, Autodesk Design Review, IMSI TurboCAR Deluxe 18, IMSI DoubleCAD XT Pro v3, Serif DrawPlus X4, Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3, ACD Systems Canvas 12, OpenOffice.org, Adobe Illustrator CS5, Dassault Systemes SolidWorks eDrawings Viewer and CADSoftTools ABViewer.
  • Linux: You can open these files with OpenOffice.org, FreeCAD, LibreCAD, QCAD, DrafSight, BricsCAD.

In all OS, having the right program should be enough for the extension to register automatically. If the software which can open DXF file is installed it would only be enough to click on it to. Below are the links to the main software manufacturers to open this type of files.

Many of these AutoCAD applications are paid and the choice of the application is in the hands of the application user and depeneds on what kind of operations you need to perform with file. For example, if you are only going to view the files or print, FreeCAD may be enough; counterwise, if you need more advanced drawing utilities then you will have to pay for a license either from AutoCAD or a more modest one like DrafSight.
